2016 - Fred C. Sears II

Fred C. Sears II recently retired from his position as President and CEO of the Delaware Community Foundation, a position he has held since 2002.

Prior to that, Fred, a Wilmington native, served the Delaware banking community for 38 years in several positions culminating as President of Commerce Bank Delaware. Never one to be pigeon-holed into a single area of expertise Fred also served as the City of Wilmington Finance Director and Director of Commerce and Economic Development. He was elected as an at-large member of Wilmington City Council, and served in that capacity from 1976 through 1984.

Fred’s volunteerism represents so well our Award’s namesake. Fred has served on at least 40 boards, including the Wilmington Economic and Financial Advisory Council and the Delaware Association of Non-Profit Agencies. Additionally Fred has also served as a director of Christiana Care Medical Center, Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, Diamond State Port Corporation, Leadership Delaware and many, many more.

The 21st Century Fund for Delaware’s Children is especially proud of our association with Fred as a founding member of our organization where he served as Vice-President of our Board of Directors for many years.

Under Fred C. Sears II the Delaware Community Foundation has grown into the largest philanthropical organization in Delaware managing about 1,200 charitable funds. Approximately 90 of these funds, including the 21st Century Fund for Delaware’s Children, are involved with children’s issues.

We hope you will be able to join us on April 13 as we honor Fred’s contributions and add him to our pantheon of Delaware volunteers who have given so much of themselves to make Delaware a better place to live.
