About the 21st Century Fund

History of the Muriel E. Gilman Award

The 21st Century Fund for Delaware's Children established the Muriel E. Gilman Award as a living tribute to Muriel in recognition of her outstanding community service professionally and as a volunteer. Muriel was the first woman professional at the United Way of Delaware, retiring as Executive Vice-President. During her 23 year tenure, and in retirement, she was recognized with many awards for her leadership, vision, promotion of volunteerism and service to our community. In 2005 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women.

Muriel helped found the 21st Century fund for Delaware's children and was an active member of the board of directors, as well as an active volunteer with more than a dozen educational, social service, health and governmental agencies, many directly advocating the improvement of the lives of children.

The 21st Century Fund for Delaware's Children annually recognizes an outstanding contribution to the well being of Delaware's children by presenting the Muriel E. Gilman Award. We are proud of our association with Muriel and seek to find her quality of volunteerism for children echoed in our choice for recipient of the Muriel E. Gilman Award.
